Primary Research

In order to gather some primary research for this project, I decided to devise a survey so that I could see the opinions of others. I tried to give as much freedom with the questions as I could, by using a mixture of open and closed questions.

These are the questions that I included on my survey. While I included multiple choice questions for the majority of my survey, I ensured that an option was present which would enable others to give their own opinions if they had any.

After I have left my survey online for around 14 days, I will take a look and collate the results. Then, I will analyse them and write a summary. I will be including how the results I obtained have helped my ideas to expand and how I will be using the information I have  gained.

Schedule

For this project, we were required to fill in a schedule that we would aim to follow for the duration of this project week by week.

Proposal

  • What theme have you chosen and why?
For my final project, I have decided to create a character design/model sheet and a game concept, along with  a poster to go along with my creation. I have chosen this theme as it relates to things that I am very interested in, which will help me stay motivated throughout the duration of this project. I would also like to learn more about character designing and game concepts, as they are fields that I would be interested in possibly pursuing in the future.
  • What mediums will you be using to create your work?
In order to create my work, I will be using many different skills that I have learn throughout the year on this course. I will be using a sketchbook so that I can get rough drafts of my character design/model sheet and game logo. By designing them first in a sketchbook, it will enable me to improve my designs before I begin working on the final pieces. Once those designs are complete, I will move my focus onto Photoshop. By using Photoshop, I will be able to create digital versions of my pieces using a drawing tablet, implementing the skills that I have acquired this year to help me to do so. I will then be ensuring my pieces are completed and edited using the skills I have in Photoshop.
  • Describe how you want your work to look.
I hope to produce high quality colour prints of my final pieces, which will then be mounted on a black mounting board in order to keep it all together and well presented. Then, around my final pieces, I aim to include information about how my ideas progressed to where my final piece stands once it is completed.
  • Include images that have inspired you to help you describe your idea.

This set of character illustrations from Akira Amano are very inspirational towards my project, as they show the things I hope to show through my own final designs. Some of the other works from this set by Amano will be included in my further research section of my blog. These works aren't hugely detailed throughout; however, the close-up shots of the character have been detailed more than the full body shots.
  • Describe what initial research, pre-production work and audience research you will undertake while completing this project.
I will be undertaking a lot of different types of research throughout this project. I will be starting with initial research, within which I will look further into how character designs and game concepts begin, how they are developed and where they end up, whether this be usage in an actual game or scrapped for something different. I will be researching why character designs and concepts are used within game design.

For my primary research, I will be devising a survey and posting it online in order to let people take it. With the results that I manage to collate, I will be writing up a summary of my results and using the results that I get in order to help me progress with my work. As a part of my primary research, I will also be taking photographs of things that inspire me.
  • Describe how you will present your final piece/pieces.
Ideally, I would like to present my final piece on a mounting board, with all of my completed pieces collected on it. I would like to deliver it this way, as I would be able to add various pieces of information to my work and explain how I came to do different aspects of my final pieces. If this were to be used professionally, I think I would ideally like to see it used in an art book for a game that can show the development as the project moved along.

Ideas

To start this project, we were required to create a brainstorm that would bring out our ideas and allow those viewing it to see our thought process. While I was completing this task, I decided to create more than one. I created one that showed the different things I considered creating for my final piece. Once I had the first one set out, I decided to create a separate one that allowed me to put down the ideas I had for my character design. I decided to do this, as it would allow me to expand on any of the ideas I had, as well as show others the thoughts I was having.

I tried to think of all the different things that I could do that I found interesting to me, as well as look at things that I haven't tried before.
